How to vote in New Mexico

The deadlines, early voting, mail ballots and ID rules for New Mexico, and what happens after the polls close. Every fact links to the New Mexico Secretary of State or the law it comes from. Rules change, and courts sometimes change them close to an election, so confirm anything you are relying on with the state.

Register by mail by

Computed: dated or postmarked by October 6 (28 days before), and delivered to the county clerk by the following Friday, October 9 (NMSA 1-4-8(F)).

Register in person by

Tuesday, November 3

Regular registration closes October 6, but same-day registration is available in person at the county clerk's office, participating early-voting sites, and any polling place in your county on Election Day.

Register or update your registration and vote the same day, in person only. Bring a physical ID issued by a government, tribe or school showing your name and current address, or a photo ID plus a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or similar document dated within 90 days showing your address.

Early voting

Tuesday, October 6 to Saturday, October 31

Computed: at the county clerk's office from the 28th day before the election (NMSA 1-6-5). Expanded early-voting sites open in many counties from the third Saturday before (October 17).

Received, not postmarked: by the county clerk or at a polling place in your county by 7 p.m. on Election Day (NMSA 1-6-10(B)). Return postage is prepaid. Only an immediate family member or caregiver may deliver it for you.
